Welcome to Cherry Tree
Cherry Tree is a bright, bustling Year 1 classroom filled with learning, fun, chat and laughter, where we strive to celebrate the successes of every child. Our classroom follows a continuous provision approach which allows all children to learn through play. Throughout the day all children also take part in focused activities which help encourage them to become more independent with their learning.
In Cherry Tree we have the chance to be scientists, historians, designers, explorers, writers, architects, achievers, mathematicians, journalists, musicians, artists, actors, authors, geographers and lots more! We continue to build our social and emotional development, setting new challenges, developing friendships, as well as learning from our mistakes. Building upon our phonic knowledge learnt in reception the children are taught how to spell, read and write Phases 2-5 of the Letters and Sounds programme. We play lots of games to help us ‘make and break’ words aiding our phonic knowledge. A cursive handwriting style is taught daily using a variety of songs, glitter, sand and shaving foam, not forgetting the pencil!
We follow a Mastery Maths Programme which embeds mathematical skills whilst building self-esteem and confidence with the number system. A variety of practical, hands on activities set up both inside and outside the classroom develop and extend the early foundations of mathematics. Afternoons in Cherry are filled with History, Geography, PSHE, PE, Circle Time, outdoor play, GOLDEN Time, art and DT. We begin the year by travelling back in time to the Victorian period where we get to experience the school day of a Victorian child in our History topic ‘Then and Now’. In the spring term we become builders where we explore our local area and the buildings surrounding our school. We even have the chance to help Bob the Builder build some properties for his big build in our Geography topic ‘Buildings’. We then go on to
learn all about The Great Fire of London and even get to make and burn our own Pudding Lane down in our Forest School. In the Summer term we get to set sail on The Titanic as a first or third class passenger. We enjoy sea shanties and smugglers tales where we learn all about ‘The Sea’.
We would like to introduce you to the staff who work in the Class.
