  WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN?

All schools are required to follow the National Curriculum in English, Maths, Science, ICT, Geography, History, Music, Art, Technology, Citizenship, PE & RE. Most emphasis is placed on English, Maths, Science and ICT. We present these subjects to the children through broad based themes.

At all stages and ages we will help the children to:

  • develop a command of basic English and communicate both orally and in written form with others;

  • enjoy reading for pleasure and information;

  • develop a knowledge and understanding of basic mathematical operations including algebra, measures, numbers and data handling;

  • appreciate and develop skills in creative arts and music;

  • enjoy and become skilled in recreational activities such as sport and drama

  • become curious about their immediate and wider environment and understand their responsibility to and for it;

  • increase their scientific knowledge and understanding;

  • learn that courtesy, good manners and consideration for others are very important qualities;

  • encourage good health, a high level of emotional intelligence and self acceptance

Children are grouped by ability for some subjects.

Y4 children follow an age appropriate sex education syllabus. Parents will be invited to discuss the content with the Y4 teachers, and are entitled to withdraw their child from any aspect of the programme.

We believe that all children should be taught how to keep healthy through a good diet and regular exercise. We are also concerned to channel the children’s naturally competitive energy into well mannered and co-operative team games. We run an established PE programme for KS2 children with the kind support of parents and volunteers. Children are taught the rules and skills of football, ‘kwik’ cricket, hockey, netball and country dancing. Girls and boys are required to participate in all PE activities within school hours.

Football and cricket coaching in the summer is open to any Y2 and older child. Younger children may sometimes be allowed to join if there is space. We were proud to be awarded an Active Mark for excellence in physical activity.

The School meets for regular assemblies which are concerned broadly with moral values, respect for each other’s beliefs, an awareness of other races and cultures and an awareness of our responsibility to the environment. We encourage children to value each other’s work and achievements during “sharing assembly” when we also celebrate birthdays.

Parents are welcome to attend any assembly, but particularly on the first Friday of every month at 9:10 a.m.

Any parent may withdraw his/her child from religious education or from assemblies.
